On September 16, a task force from the Lao Ministry of Public Security pulled off a series of swift raids across Vientiane, sweeping into four local hotels: the Eastin, Inthad, Minta, and La Sen. To anyone passing by, these places looked like ordinary spots for tourists to crash. But behind closed doors, police found tucked-away hubs running cyber fraud and illegal cross-border gambling.

Local media reported that officers picked up 41 suspects during the operation. A head count revealed 40 Thai nationals and one Chinese national. Police cleared out a hefty stash of gear on the spot, confiscating 62 smartphones, 26 laptops, and four iPads.

The suspects are currently being interrogated as police push ahead with legal proceedings. Out on the streets of Vientiane, it is business as usual—motorbikes roaring past and roadside food stalls steaming in the air. Yet right upstairs in everyday hotel rooms, scam rings were quietly churning out cash. With Lao authorities turning up the heat lately, anyone trying to hole up in a guest room with a few laptops is finding out there is nowhere left to hide.
