On October 20, Thai immigration officers detained a 41-year-old Chinese businessman, known by the alias "Mr. Ma," in Bangkok's Rama IX district. He was wanted by Chinese judicial authorities under an active arrest warrant for allegedly defrauding more than 100 victims in Beijing through a fraudulent insurance investment scheme, with total losses amounting to approximately 220 million Thai baht.

The operation stemmed from a list of wanted fugitives that the Chinese Embassy in Thailand passed on through the foreign affairs division of the Royal Thai Police. Officers carried out checks on the ground and arrested him, and will coordinate his repatriation to China to stand trial in line with procedures.

The case shows Chinese and Thai authorities pairing fugitive-list referrals with on-the-ground checks, which may leave less room for suspects hoping to escape prosecution by leaving the country.
