According to allegations made by a local journalist on October 19, a second lieutenant in the military gendarmerie is accused of providing long-term protection for online scam operations in Poipet. The allegations claim that protection fees had evolved into a standardized scheme: small dens running no more than 10 computers were reportedly charged a flat rate of 3,000 USD per month, while those operating with over 10 computers allegedly had to hand over 30 percent of their operating revenue.
Furthermore, the report alleges that the officer may have leaked advance warnings before law enforcement raids, enabling scam syndicates to quickly relocate staff and equipment to evade crackdowns.
If true, the claims would suggest that scam dens near the border may enjoy protection from inside law enforcement. However, the authorities have not issued any official statement regarding the matter, and the allegations remain unconfirmed pending further official verification.
