On October 20, 2026, Nong Khai immigration officers and the 245th Border Patrol Police arrested eight Chinese nationals who had entered Thailand illegally, along with a Thai driver and a Lao helper. The local network had a clear division of labor: a 59-year-old Thai man drove the eight men to a local resort for a promised fee of 4,000 baht, while a 48-year-old Lao man handled room bookings and food delivery while waiting to transport them further into Thailand's interior provinces.

All eight Chinese nationals had crossed into Thailand from Laos. Among them, one of them, Jiao Wenjie, was found to have a prior record of illegal entry in Surin Province. According to his confession, they were lured by a Chinese boss in Laos with promises of high pay into crossing illegally into Thailand for work.

Police have pressed charges including assisting illegal entry, harboring unauthorized immigrants, and unlawful entry against the suspects, transferring them to the Nong Khai Provincial Police Station for further legal proceedings. Chasing vague promises of high overseas pay through smuggling routes often ends in custody long before any supposed paycheck arrives.
