Sit down for an iced coffee at a roadside stall lately, and you are almost guaranteed to see someone at the next table glued to their phone. On their screen: bite-sized Chinese short dramas—one or two minutes per episode—packed with dramatic twists, already dubbed and subtitled in Khmer.

At the recently wrapped-up China-ASEAN Expo, tech companies were showing off how the magic happens behind the scenes, using AI to build these shows from scratch. From writing scripts and designing characters to generating dynamic video, all it takes is a few prompts typed into a computer. In one live demo, a simple text prompt instantly generated a video of figures in black robes walking through a mountain range—no filming location or cameras required.

The team behind the system explained that by combining several domestic and international AI models, producing a minute of video costs around 200 to 300 yuan. That makes it an attractive shortcut for screenwriters, directors, and production houses. Another platform at the expo bragged about a catalog of over 10,000 Chinese and Southeast Asian short dramas available in 14 languages, pumping out 30 new titles a month. The Khmer-language clips popping up across phone screens in Cambodia right now are either real actors translated with computer help, or fully AI-made from script to screen to voiceover.

For local e-commerce sellers, advertisers, and writers, these cheap digital tools offer an undeniable way to slash production costs. But Cambodian audiences are far from passive. Khmer is a language built heavily on social hierarchy, context, and subtle forms of respect. Straight machine translation usually comes out stiff and awkward, pulling viewers right out of the story. On top of that, murky copyright rules and rising anxiety among local translation crews and voice actors worried about being replaced remain unresolved.

AI tools are undeniably fast and cheap. The real question now is whether creators in Cambodia can use them to start telling their own stories, or if locals will just end up scrolling through a endless stream of imported content.
