According to a report by China Gansu Net on the evening of October 19, police in Hezuo City, Gannan Prefecture, Gansu Province, successfully intercepted a fraudulent investment scheme. On the morning of October 15, local authorities received an anti-fraud alert showing that a resident surnamed Yan was falling victim to a fake investment scam. Investigations revealed Yan had already withdrawn 510,000 yuan in cash across two transactions—160,000 yuan and 350,000 yuan—and had arranged to hand over the money to a designated individual the following day.
Local criminal investigation and SWAT teams quickly set up an ambush in advance. At noon on October 16, just as the cash courier completed the handover and was preparing to leave, officers lying in wait arrested the suspect on the spot. The entire 510,000 yuan was intercepted, sparing Yan any further loss.
As digital transactions face real-time banking scrutiny and instant freezes, fraud syndicates often instruct victims to withdraw massive amounts of physical cash and deploy ground runners—commonly referred to as money couriers—for physical handovers. Many who take these courier jobs may simply be lured by promises of quick, high-paying part-time work, yet they end up directly participating in criminal operations at immense personal risk. For overseas Chinese and their families back home, any investment platform demanding cash withdrawals to be handed over to strangers is almost certainly a trap.
