Motorbikes have been buzzing through Phnom Penh streets lately, while quietly behind the scenes, a major new art exhibition has been coming together in the city.
Starting September 19 at Recommendation (Hiroshima House), a group exhibition titled *Light: An Ecology of Hope* officially opens its doors. The event brings together more than 50 artists, creators, and photographers from Cambodia and across Southeast Asia, blending ancestral wisdom, environmental reflection, and new technology to explore what our future might look like.
Laid out across eight chapters—moving from soil and mycelium all the way to growth and seeds—the exhibition reads like a journey of the mind. Leading up to the launch, over 20 artists spent time in Phnom Penh studios hashing out ideas on energy, livelihoods, and mental resilience in the age of artificial intelligence. Some even took discarded solar panels and painted directly onto them. Meanwhile, another group of more than 20 creators headed out to the forests and ancient villages of Kampong Thom province, getting their boots muddy in search of inspiration. Local reports note that the exhibition features not just Cambodian voices, but also works by photographers from Gaza and the West Bank, offering visitors a look at how people in different parts of the world weather life's storms.
Sokheng, a Cambodian architect participating in the show, believes there is deep wisdom hidden in everyday traditional objects—pointing out how something as simple as a woven bamboo basket already figures out climate and materials perfectly, proving we don't always need to swap out tradition for brand-new machines. Another creator, Konsovansakana, puts it simply: being "punk" means not just sitting around waiting for big institutions to fix things, but rolling up your sleeves and building a way out yourself.
On opening day, September 19, visitors can check out more than just the artwork. The lineup includes traditional spoken word poetry, documentary screenings, and traditional instruments fused with electronic music, welcoming neighbors and art lovers alike to come check it out.
