Things were lively in Banteay Meanchey’s Malai district over the past couple of days, as local schools and community leaders joined forces for a big back-to-school push ahead of the new academic year. School principals, teachers, students, and district officials hit the streets together, rallying to make sure every school-age child gets registered in time.
Instead of just issuing statements from behind office desks, teachers and students took to the pavement with stacks of flyers. They went door-to-door, chatting directly with parents and urging them not to keep their children at home when they should be in class. Malai District Governor Svay Chea joined the effort, calling on parents to bring their kids to the nearest public school to enroll. Education, he stressed, is the single best way to uplift families and build a better future, and no child should be left behind.
In a dusty town where everyday life can be a grind and families work hard just to get by, keeping kids in school can sometimes take a back seat. Watching local teachers and district officers walk the lanes together—handing leaflets to street vendors and knocking on front doors—it is clear how much heart the community is putting into giving their children a real shot at an education.
