Fuel prices across Cambodia bumped up again this afternoon as the Ministry of Commerce implemented its latest retail rates starting at 1:00 PM. Both regular gasoline and diesel are now noticeably more expensive, with the new price structure set to remain in place until October 1.
Regular 92 petrol rose to 5,250 riel per liter, up 450 riel from the previous rate of 4,800 riel. Diesel saw an even steeper jump, climbing 650 riel from 5,450 riel to 6,100 riel per liter.
Pointing to ongoing volatility in international oil markets, the Ministry of Commerce noted that the government continues to provide subsidies to cushion the public from the full brunt of global price spikes. Even with that financial buffer, however, the latest adjustment translates into a very real increase in daily expenses for anyone on the move.
The impact is immediate on the streets, where motorbikes and tuk-tuks carry the bulk of daily traffic. In the heavy afternoon heat of Phnom Penh, drivers queuing up at roadside petrol stations were doing the quick math in their heads as they filled their tanks. For the thousands who rely on their wheels to make a living every single day, every extra riel spent at the pump comes straight out of their daily earnings.
