On October 20, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts against suspected resurgent Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) and transnational drug smuggling, directing them to track down those involved and seize illegal items.
According to reports, the police, the drug enforcement agency and other agencies have begun acting on the order, with surprise inspections reported in Zamboanga Sibugay province and Makati City, among other places.
Meanwhile, the government is reassessing visa-free entry for Chinese nationals, focusing on whether the policy has been exploited by criminals to engage in illegal gambling, online scams and other illegal activities. No conclusion of the review has been announced, and no arrest or raid figures for this round have been disclosed.
Whether POGOs are staging a fresh comeback, and how many more sites will be raided, remains to be seen.
