Neth Pheaktra, a member of the Cambodian People’s Party Central Committee and head of the national working group for Kratie province, recently visited Chhloung district to meet with grassroots officials across eight local communes. The main topic on the agenda: how to build and strengthen party membership right down at the village level.
Officials at the gathering stressed that growing the grassroots base cannot be treated as a mere numbers game. While headcounts still matter, an individual’s character, sense of responsibility, and real engagement are what truly count. Simply put, recruits need to be reliable people who do genuine good for their neighbors and set a positive example in daily life.
Out in a district like Chhloung, community life looks very different from the capital. Between the motorbikes humming down provincial roads and roadside stalls selling iced coffee, these are tight-knit villages where everyone knows who is trustworthy and who actually gets things done. For local communities, padding a roster with names on paper means very little. It is far better to bring in a few dependable, down-to-earth people who are ready to roll up their sleeves and help solve real problems for the people around them.
