Tourism Minister Huot Hak made it clear recently: if Cambodia wants a truly strong tourism sector, the top priority right now is training its people. Whether it’s hotel front desks, tour guiding, or restaurant service, raising professional skills and official qualifications across the board is the only way service standards will hold up.

You can feel the local pulse just walking down the street—Phnom Penh and Siem Reap are buzzing with rental rooms, tea stalls, and roadside food vendors operating through late shifts and motorbike exhaust. Hosting tourists might seem straightforward, but when the smaller service details fall short, the whole guest experience takes a hit. Local officials stress there are no shortcuts to better service—properly training workers is the bedrock.

At the end of the day, heavy advertising and building new hotels aren't enough on their own. The soft side of hospitality has to keep pace. By placing skills certification and workforce development at the top of its agenda, the Ministry of Tourism wants to make local ground teams and frontline staff more professional, giving visitors a sense of confidence and real value for their trip.
