On Sunday, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Civil Service Hun Many, who also heads the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia, made the long trip out to Srah Chik commune in Banteay Meanchey province. He visited six local settlements known as "waiting villages" to check on families who had relocated and were temporarily living at these transit points.
According to local reports, the visit was mainly to hand out humanitarian aid to residents facing financial hardships and to chat with people about their daily lives and living conditions. High-ranking officials making grassroots visits with donations of rice and other basic supplies are a familiar sight in local news.
Making the bumpy journey all the way from Phnom Penh to the northwestern frontier meant dodging dust and motorbikes the entire way. Life in these waiting villages is far from easy, and when relief visits happen, neighbors usually gather round to see what is going on and hear a few encouraging words from the top, even as they know they still have to get on with day-to-day life.
