Walking down the streets and alleys of Phnom Penh, young faces are everywhere. For a long time, a large population, youth, and cheap wages have been the country's golden ticket for drawing in foreign investment. But those days of relying purely on armies of young laborers to take orders and fill factories might be about to change.

Local media reported that Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol recently made it clear that Cambodia can’t keep doing things the old way. He noted that the country needs to pivot toward technology, productivity, and higher value-added industries. Put simply, the strategy of drawing investors just by offering cheap, heavy labor has to go—it’s time to upgrade skills and sharpen expertise.

For people out on the street trying to make a living and picking up odd jobs, the big policy talk might sound a bit distant, but the message is clear: if you want to make a decent buck from now on, just putting in raw muscle won't cut it anymore. You’re going to need some real skills.
