Over the past few days in Phnom Penh, more than thirty local and international organizations, government bodies, and associations have gathered for a series of meetings to discuss a fresh idea: whether to set a minimum age limit for social media use in the country.
Walk down any street these days, and you will see kids glued to their phones—whether they've just finished school or are hanging out at a roadside stall sharing a fruit shake. Short videos on TikTok and Facebook have completely captured their attention, and parents are finding it harder and harder to keep them off their screens.
Local media report that these discussions are still in the early stages, so there are no firm details yet on how a restriction might work or what the cutoff age would be. Even so, it looks like the days of kids easily setting up social media accounts on a whim might soon be coming to an end.
