Forestry officials in Kratie province pulled off a surprise night raid on September 20, catching a vehicle illegally hauling charcoal near the Kantuot Forestry Administration Station.
The crackdown came on direct orders from higher-ups after recent news reports exposed weak enforcement in the area, calling out local authorities for turning a blind eye while smugglers made easy money.
It is an open secret in the area. Trucks loaded with charcoal roll out of local villages every single day. Many drivers make arrangements and pay off officers in advance to get smooth passage through checkpoints. Those who fail to clear their route beforehand risk getting busted.
This time, team leader Tri Mengleang bypassed the local station staff entirely, leading a surprise inspection without giving them a head-up. His team managed to intercept one truck, though several other drivers scattered and got away. Both the seized vehicle and its load of charcoal are now impounded as officials prepare legal proceedings.
