Sitting at a roadside coffee stall this morning, I caught a group of local businessmen chatting about former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak. It seems his fate is the talk of the town again. A statement released a couple of days ago by the legal affairs division of the Malaysian Prime Minister’s Department made the terms clear: if Najib wants to spend the rest of his sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028, he must first pay his 50 million ringgit fine—roughly $12.26 million USD—in full. That condition was granted by the current King following an appeal. Local media report that if the 73-year-old can't come up with the money or breaks a single rule, the royal clemency is immediately revoked, and he goes straight back to a standard prison cell.
That 50 million ringgit fine was already a massive discount handed down in January by the previous King, who cut his original 12-year sentence to six years and slashed the fine from 210 million ringgit. Now, UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is stepping in, publicly announcing a nationwide party fundraising drive to help Najib settle the debt. Around local neighborhood coffee shops, people sipping tea under old political posters are all asking the same question: can his supporters really pull off raising millions of dollars for him?
The roots of this whole mess go back to the infamous 1MDB state development fund. Najib launched it in 2009 when he first took office, promising to attract foreign investment for national development. Instead, more than $4.5 billion was siphoned off and laundered into luxury mansions, superyachts, master paintings, and even the Hollywood blockbuster The Wolf of Wall Street. Officials and the US Department of Justice branded it one of the largest kleptocracy scandals in world history. Out on the streets here, where ordinary people zip around narrow alleys on beat-up motorbikes just grinding to make ends meet, watching this tale of mind-boggling wealth and high-stakes prison drama is just something to chat about over morning coffee.
