Over coffee in Phnom Penh and all across local social media, everyone has been talking about Juri Lhouas and her run in an international beauty pageant. Things got heated online when the swimsuit segment came around, bringing a wave of criticism her way. Speaking to local media, Juri set the record straight, explaining that the swimsuit round is simply a standard requirement designed to judge a contestant's catwalk skills so they can score points and advance to the next round.
Opening up about the hardship, Juri admitted that competing is nowhere near as glamorous as people imagine. She’s had to pay out of her own pocket and invest countless hours into the process. For her, just stepping under the spotlights in a swimsuit meant pushing past deep shyness and forcing herself way out of her comfort zone. She expressed frustration that after making so many personal sacrifices, some netizens threw shade without even bothering to understand how the competition works.
Juri put a straightforward question back to her critics: if she is representing Cambodia in the swimsuit round, how can the judges rate her performance if she doesn't wear the official attire? She acknowledged that Cambodian culture is quite traditional, where people normally wrap themselves up completely just to ride a moto through the streets. But on an international stage, rules are rules. Regardless of the gossip and noise, Juri said she takes pride in representing Cambodia and will keep pushing forward to give the rest of the competition her absolute best.
