Things got pretty tense at the Royal Air Force Fairford base over the weekend when a German-registered Cessna private plane landed unannounced, sending security personnel scrambling to surround and check out the aircraft.
Flight tracking data shows the plane took off from London City Airport just before 9:00 AM and touched down a little over half an hour later at the military base, which is also used by US bombers. Local media reported that the pilot had actually intended to land at a nearby civilian airport instead, but ended up at the wrong place. The aircraft stayed on the ground for about three hours before taking off again.
Security at military restricted zones is normally extremely tight, so it is rare for a private plane to just drop in like that. However, follow-up reports confirmed it was purely an honest mistake and a mix-up, with no malicious intent whatsoever—a false alarm all around.
