Sipping iced kopi at a Phnom Penh tea stall while listening to a nearby table of import-export bosses tallying their books, you get a real sense of where things are heading. According to the General Department of Customs and Excise, bilateral trade between Cambodia and Malaysia crossed the one-billion-dollar mark in the first eight months of this year, surging 55.5 percent compared to the same period in 2023. It is a solid, confidence-boosting number, and local truck drivers will tell you they have definitely noticed a pickup in hauling jobs over the last few months.
Looking closer at the numbers, Cambodia exported over 150 million dollars in goods to Malaysia, a jump of nearly 72 percent. Meanwhile, shipments coming the other way from Malaysia topped 900 million dollars, also climbing by more than 50 percent. Malaysia currently holds the spot as Cambodia's seventh-largest trading partner, sitting behind China, the US, Vietnam, Thailand, Japan, and Singapore. Cambodia Chamber of Commerce Vice President Lim Heng noted that both sides have opened their commercial doors wider, bringing bilateral cooperation closer than ever.
Walk down almost any street in town and you will spot Malaysian-owned shops or joint ventures doing business with locals. Whether it is neighborhood food spots or larger investments, business owners feel that the local economy and business climate are steadily improving, drawing in foreign investors looking for new opportunities.
