The 16th National Employment and Productivity Fair is currently underway at the Koh Pich Convention and Exhibition Center in Phnom Penh. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Som Sok Sopha pointed out that while Cambodia’s young population, abundant workforce, and reasonable wages have traditionally drawn plenty of investors, times are changing fast. With neighboring countries stepping up their game to grab a slice of the pie, the old strategy of relying purely on cheap labor is no longer enough.
Local media noted that the Deputy Prime Minister hit on some hard truths: many companies still struggle to find the right talent, and a portion of the workforce lacks up-to-date skills. True productivity isn't about working people to the bone around the clock—it's about working smarter through technology and better craftsmanship. Under its Pentagonal Strategy, the government has made workforce upgrading a top priority, pushing industries to move toward higher-tech operations.
