The Chinese Embassy in Cambodia hosted a reception yesterday to celebrate the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Ambassador Wang Wenbin welcomed a lineup of Cambodian heavyweights, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and National Assembly President Khuon Sudary. Supreme Privy Councilors to the King Tea Banh and Men Sam An also attended, alongside royal family members and senior political and military officials.
It wasn't just a gathering for officials. Big names from the local Chinese diaspora turned out as well, led by Neak Oknha Pung Kheav Se, head of the Association of Chinese in Cambodia, along with many long-time local Chinese residents. Usually tied up with their own businesses and daily routines, attendees took the rare occasion to slow down and catch up with old friends.
The gathering had a lively, familiar warmth to it. Step outside afterward, and Phnom Penh was as full of life as ever—street vendors frying up bananas by the curb, motorbikes roaring past in the evening heat, and workers knocking off for the night to sip iced coffee on roadside stools. For those making a living far from home, the glowing lights of the embassy and a night together bring a reassuring sense of comfort to life on the move.
