On January 16, senior Ministry of Interior official Chhay Sinarith, who leads Cambodia’s anti-cyber scam task force, met with British Ambassador Dominic Williams to discuss the ongoing crackdown on high-tech crime.
During the meeting, Sinarith briefed the ambassador on recent operations targeting major scam hubs across the country. He reiterated the government's uncompromising stance, making it clear that ringleaders and their accomplices will face severe penalties. Because these syndicates operate across borders with bosses pulling the strings from abroad, Cambodia’s next priority is expanding cooperation with international law enforcement to track and dismantle these networks globally. Ambassador Williams commended Cambodia’s recent progress in busting several large-scale scam operations.
Out on the streets, the shift is already noticeable. Anyone heading home late past the dense rental hubs in town might have overheard local vendors—selling fried bread and iced coffee—talking about the frequent police patrols lately. Rows of previously packed rental rooms have suddenly gone dark and empty, and the usual late-night roar of motorbikes cutting through the alleys has noticeably thinned out. For anyone living and working here, the hope is that this push alongside foreign partners will finally clear out these syndicates for good and bring peace back to the neighborhoods.
