Recently, the scam scene in Myanmar has been buzzing, especially in areas like Myawaddy and Shwe Kokko in Karen State. It seems a number of Indian scam groups have moved in. After China cracked down on telecom fraud, many long-established gangs were pushed out, leaving a gap that the Indians quickly filled.
These groups are quite sophisticated. They leverage India's English-speaking talent and established call centers, luring young people with offers of “high-paying IT and data entry jobs.” Many end up traveling to Thailand first, only to be sent on to Myanmar. In some cases, their passports are confiscated, leaving them with no choice but to participate in the scams.
Their tactics are high-tech too, involving fake cryptocurrency investments, impersonating tech company customer service, and even pretending to be U.S. government agencies. With the use of AI-generated scripts and deepfakes, the situation has become quite alarming. Locals are starting to worry as the scam landscape grows increasingly complex.
