Lately, the markets in Phnom Penh have been pretty quiet, and vendors are looking quite worried. Foot traffic has noticeably dropped, and everyone’s talking about how tough business has become. If you walk down the street, you’ll hear plenty of complaints about how sales are much worse than last year.

Interestingly, though, suitcases have suddenly become a hot item. Some vendors told me that many foreigners are packing up and getting ready to leave Cambodia, which has driven up the demand for luggage. It’s surprising how something usually overlooked has turned into a best-seller.

In the local markets, suitcase sales are impressive, while other products are being heavily discounted. The prices for luggage, however, remain steady. It seems that as foreign friends depart, suitcases have become an essential item for them. Locals are left wondering if business will pick up again anytime soon.
