Things have been a bit tense over in East Timor lately. Local media reported that the police, just the other night, around 10 PM, suddenly raided a hotel in Dili called Garden Beach. It wasn't just a routine check; they went straight in to make arrests.
They nabbed twelve foreigners right away – eight from mainland China and four from Taiwan. Word is, these folks all came in on tourist visas, but their visas expired, and they just stayed put, hiding out in the hotel. They were apparently running some kind of scam call center, and illegal gambling was involved too.
When the police searched the place, wow, they found a ton of phones and computers, and even two Starlink devices. You know, ordinary people don't just get their hands on stuff like that. They probably got those high-tech gadgets to avoid being tracked. Honestly, these kinds of things aren't that uncommon around here. A lot of people come thinking they can make a quick buck and then disappear.
Now all twelve of them are locked up, and the case has been sent to the public prosecutor's office for review. Looks like they're in for a long haul. What were they even thinking, you know? Coming all this way, to a place they don't know, only to end up getting caught.
Out on the streets here, the motorbikes are still buzzing at night, and the street stalls are open as usual. But when something like this happens, it just feels a bit off, makes you feel a jolt inside.
