Thai police announced on October 6 the arrest of a 33-year-old suspect, Thanainan, in Tak Province. Authorities accuse him of taking part in the kidnapping of a Chinese national, plotting to smuggle the victim to the border and hand him over to a telecom fraud syndicate operating inside Myanmar.
The incident took place in September when police intercepted a suspect vehicle in Mae Sot. Officers rescued the Chinese victim on the spot, finding him with his head and face wrapped in tape, his hands tied, and wearing handcuffs. Two other Thai suspects were arrested inside the vehicle. Investigators allege Thanainan acted as a scout and logistics coordinator to help the transport avoid checkpoints; he currently denies all charges as Mae Sot police proceed with the case.
The victim was intercepted just in time and never made it across the border.
