Thai police announced on October 2 that two Japanese university students, aged 20 and 21, were tricked by recruiter promises covering their flights, lodging, and meals. After landing in Thailand, they were driven to Kanchanaburi province and led on foot across the border into a scam base in Payathonzu, Myanmar. Controlled by a Japanese-speaking Chinese supervisor, they were instructed to make fraudulent phone calls targeting citizens back in Japan.

During their detention, the students managed to covertly alert the Japanese diplomatic mission in Myanmar and their families with their live location. Following emergency coordination, Thai police safely retrieved the pair on September 30. Investigators are now tracking down the logistics and recruitment network while intensifying patrols along natural border paths in Sangkhla Buri.
