According to Thailand's Pha Muang Task Force, a patrol team spotted a group of 15 to 17 suspects carrying modified backpacks near a border village in Mae Fa Luang district, Chiang Rai, around 8:10 p.m. on Sunday. When soldiers signaled for an inspection, the suspects opened fire, sparking an intense 10-minute firefight.
During a sweep of the site the following morning, troops discovered the bodies of nine suspects. Military personnel seized 16 modified backpacks containing approximately 17 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine each, bringing the total haul to roughly 272 kilograms, while the surviving smugglers managed to escape.
