Malaysian authorities revealed on September 27 that between February and August this year, a total of 101.66 million scam and spoofed calls were intercepted nationwide. Many of these calls originated abroad but were technologically masked to appear as domestic Malaysian numbers, luring recipients into dropping their guard.
To counter the tactic, Malaysia deployed a cross-carrier spoofing interception gateway this year to detect abnormal routing and sever fraudulent connections between networks. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching noted that blocking over 100 million calls in just seven months proves the system has become a vital safeguard against cross-border telecom fraud.
