According to data recently released by the Center for HIV/AIDS and STI in Laos, a total of 1,835,503 individuals underwent testing between 1990 and August 2026, with 26,693 confirmed HIV cases and 6,335 related deaths. The positive rate among those screened stands at approximately 1.45%. Authorities noted that this percentage applies solely to the tested population rather than the national population as a whole.
Health officials pointed out that the main challenge remains low awareness of proactive screening. Many individuals only seek medical attention after developing evident symptoms, missing the ideal window for timely intervention. The department urged broader testing coverage and prompt antiretroviral therapy upon diagnosis.
