According to reports, several betel nut stands operating at night in Mandalay have morphed into disguised brothels. While still selling betel nuts on the surface, their attached apartment rooms are decorated with neon lights, where young women in short skirts are arranged to receive customers and provide commercial sex services.
Sources noted that the rule of law has severely broken down across the country since the military takeover, leading to rampant illicit drugs, widespread casinos, and a sharp rise in underground nighttime businesses.
