According to reports from the ground, the Cambodian border town, which once hosted a massive influx of Chinese workers and business operators, has seen rows of retail shops and commercial complexes shut down. Foot traffic has virtually vanished, leaving the urban core looking like an abandoned ghost town.

Poipet's rapid expansion was heavily fueled by border casinos and grey-market online operation compounds, which quickly spawned a lucrative support ecosystem of restaurants, hotels, and retail catering directly to that demographic. However, as sustained law enforcement crackdowns hit the compounds and prompted an exodus of personnel and capital, the local retail economy lost its primary revenue base almost overnight.

With the rush over, the town is left with empty storefronts, idle properties, and an unresolved overhang of lease commitments. The tide receded much faster than anyone anticipated, leaving behind an eerie stillness where the crowd used to be.
