Macau Judiciary Police and Zhuhai Public Security Bureau announced a coordinated raid that dismantled a cross-border telecom fraud den operating in Zhuhai, mainland China. Three mainland technical core members, surnamed Chen (37), Zhang (39), and Zeng (29), were detained on site. Between late September and mid-October, the trio placed at least 19,500 scam calls into Macau, duping 54 local residents out of more than 10 million patacas, with individual losses ranging from several thousand up to 2 million MOP.
The group operated with precise technical camouflage. Stationed in Zhuhai, they configured signal gear with Macau prepaid SIM cards connected directly to Macau's Ilha Verde cellular base station. When calls were pushed through, incoming displays appeared as ordinary local Macau numbers, significantly lowering victims' guard. Posing as TikTok customer support, the scammers claimed that victims' live-streaming memberships were about to expire and require recurring charges, guiding them to download third-party tools, enable screen-sharing, and unknowingly leak banking credentials. For credit card holders, victims were even instructed to toggle phone NFC sensors to read physical card details, which were immediately cashed out via offshore payment processors.
Police seized 66 smartphones, over 200 Macau SIM cards, and various transmission devices during the apartment raid. While mainland authorities continue tracking the money laundering routes and downstream handlers, investigators confirmed no Macau residents have been found directly involved in the operational cell so far.
