Thailand's Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) recently located and rescued, at a residence in Samut Prakan province, a Chinese woman trapped in an elaborate telecom fraud scheme. According to police, the gang initially posed as law enforcement officers, claiming she was implicated in illegal business operations. Under the guise of asset verification, they coerced her into transferring over 8 million Thai baht.
The operation did not end after the funds were drained. The syndicate subsequently lured her to fly to Thailand, isolating her in a private residence and cutting off her communication with the outside world. They then contacted her family back home to demand a so-called security deposit, turning the case into an offshore virtual kidnapping.
When officers found her, she still refused to believe she had been defrauded, and it took her parents stepping in to confirm it before she accepted the truth. This tactic of isolating victims overseas to exploit information blackouts has increasingly resurfaced across Southeast Asia, complicating cross-border tracing for local authorities.
