On October 14, the Lao Ministry of Public Security handed over 39 Thai nationals, including 14 women, to Thai police at the First Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge checkpoint connecting Vientiane and Nong Khai. According to official notices, they are suspected of involvement in cybercrime and illegal online gambling operations, with further legal proceedings to be handled in Thailand.
The group was apprehended during targeted anti-scam operations conducted by Lao law enforcement between July and August. Raids were launched across several sites, notably ST Vegas Company in Dong Phosy village of Hadxayfong district, as well as Building 8 of the International Asia Building within the That Luang Marsh Special Economic Zone in Vientiane.
From village compounds to special economic zones in the capital itself, these named raids send a clear signal. The direct targeting of premises inside zones like That Luang Marsh indicates shrinking room for illicit operations, as coordinated cross-border repatriation becomes increasingly routine.
For foreign workers and business operators in Laos, the tightening regulatory landscape is unmistakable. Staying clear of suspicious high-salary recruitments and keeping distance from online gambling hubs remains the only way to avoid legal exposure.
