According to police reports, the incident occurred yesterday night in Sen Sok district, Phnom Penh. Mo Zongren, a deputy director general at the Ministry of Mines and Energy, was taken into custody by local police after allegedly firing a weapon that injured his biological son.
Police stated that Mo was pursuing his wife's vehicle by car, suspecting she was inside with another man. In a state of intense anger, he allegedly drew a firearm and fired shots to intimidate and force the vehicle to stop. However, a bullet reportedly ricocheted and struck his son in the abdomen.
By the time law enforcement officers arrived at the scene, the wife and the alleged lover had fled amid the chaos. Mo was arrested on the spot by police, and the case remains under active investigation with formal charges yet to be determined.
What began as a domestic dispute over suspected infidelity escalated into an armed pursuit and ended with a child caught in the crossfire. When high-ranking status, firearms, and unchecked rage intersect, the unintended consequences often fall hardest on one's own family.
For foreign residents living and working in Phnom Penh, incidents like this serve as a stark reminder. Whenever local domestic disputes turn chaotic or involve weapons, bystanders should steer well clear and avoid any involvement.
