A spokesman for Cambodia's Interior Ministry recently told media that since the government launched a robust crackdown on cyber fraud, 77 national police officers involved in these crimes have been arrested and sentenced to prison. Multiple major ringleaders have also been caught, with some serving sentences in Cambodia and others deported to their countries of origin. Large compound hubs have been shut down, and roughly 400,000 foreign nationals linked to the offenses have been deported or left the country voluntarily.
Sentencing 77 police officers shows that the umbrella of protection surrounding these operations is finally being addressed. However, the ministry spokesman admitted that fraudulent activities continue in scattered, fragmented forms, while some syndicates are still attempting to scale operations back up. Law enforcement reiterated that there will be zero tolerance once intelligence is received.
As heavy compound operations splinter into residential apartments and private homes, illicit operations become harder to spot. For ordinary foreigners living and working in Cambodia, renting properties or taking new jobs now requires extra diligence—keeping documents in order and steering completely clear of any suspicious operations.
