According to Vietnamese media reports, a draft amendment to the Law on Prevention and Control of Tobacco Harms is currently under review and expected to be submitted to the National Assembly by the end of this year. Under the proposed bill, indoor public venues that were previously allowed to maintain designated smoking areas—including bars, karaoke parlors, dance halls, hotels, and passenger terminals—along with ships and trains, will gradually transition toward a complete smoking ban. The new regulations are expected to take effect on July 1, 2027.

Retail regulations are set to tighten simultaneously. The draft proposes a ban on displaying cigarette products at points of sale, strictly prohibits tobacco sales via e-commerce platforms and vending machines, and establishes a 100-meter tobacco-free radius around schools and hospitals. Additionally, e-cigarettes, shisha, and nicotine pouches will face a comprehensive, supply-chain-wide prohibition.

For Chinese business owners operating hospitality, karaoke, and bar businesses in Vietnam, these changes will require a timely adjustment of indoor policies and venue layouts, as designated smoking rooms will no longer be an option. Frequent travelers and visitors should also take note of the total ban on e-cigarettes to avoid compliance issues upon arrival.
