Yesterday, Poipet city authorities carried out joint administrative inspections of homes, rental rooms and leased villas across the city. Officially, the goal is to tighten grassroots public order, keep full track of who is living in densely populated residential areas, and improve local security and control.

This round, however, turned up no online scam operations and no leads.

Poipet sits on the Thai border and has been a focus of crackdowns for the past couple of years. An empty sweep could mean the people involved moved on long ago, or that checks like this are mainly about routine registration and deterrence. Authorities did not say which.

For Chinese nationals renting and doing business there legitimately, the fact that the first post-holiday round went straight to homes and villas means oversight of foreign residents will not loosen any time soon. It is wise to keep passports, visas, work permits and lease papers ready in case of a check.
