Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is in Beijing on a five-day working visit, said Malaysia wants to deepen cooperation with China, focusing on cyber fraud, cross-border investigations and the recovery of assets stolen through scams and other illegal activity.

He was blunt about why: online fraud spans several countries, and no single country's police can deal with it alone. That is why the two sides plan to step up intelligence sharing and coordinate investigations and enforcement.

Asset recovery sits near the top of the list. Ahmad Zahid said Malaysia joined the joint program of the international coalition against telecom and online fraud on September 10, making cross-border investigations and the recovery of stolen assets priorities. At home, he tabled the Cyber Crime Bill in the lower house of parliament in July to strengthen the legal framework against online crime.

Malaysia and China have also set up a joint security committee to cooperate against drug trafficking, including sharing intelligence and investigating trafficking activity and drug-processing facilities.

For Chinese nationals living and working in Malaysia, the message is that cross-border money flows and payment channels will face closer scrutiny. Moving locations or routing funds through extra accounts to buy time will get harder once the two countries share more intelligence.
