A recent case in Shanghai exposed the collapse of the "National Cattle Raising" platform, which lured more than 120,000 investors into a 560-million-yuan Ponzi scheme. The platform claimed users could adopt Australian beef cattle for 5,000 yuan each, promising managed care, bulk sales, and annual yields ranging from 5% to 15%. Many participants poured in life savings after early payouts went smoothly, with one investor putting in 3 million yuan to acquire 600 virtual cows.

The facade crumbled in May 2024 when users discovered their cattle had been forcibly converted into beef redemption quotas. Customer support then persuaded victims to list these quotas for consignment on the platform, promising cash returns. Months went by without a single buyer, leaving account balances completely frozen and prompting police reports across multiple cities.

Investigators found that neither the overseas ranches nor the cattle ever existed. The live camera feeds in the app were fabricated using web footage and rented surveillance cameras. Operating without financial permits since 2016, the syndicate spent only 8 million yuan on actual beef out of the 560 million yuan raised, using most of the rest to pay earlier investors in a classic rob-Peter-to-pay-Paul scheme, plus operating and personal expenses.

On April 7 this year, the Xuhui District People's Court in Shanghai sentenced the ringleader, surnamed Zhang, to ten years and six months in prison for fundraising fraud, along with a 750,000-yuan fine. When high-yield agricultural schemes rely on illusions rather than real commercial operations, a total collapse is only a matter of time.
