The Intermediate People's Court of Quanzhou and Nan'an People's Court in Fujian handed down first-instance verdicts in the Wei syndicate trial. Ring leaders Wei Huairen, Chen David, and Liao Jingfang were sentenced to death. Wei Qingtao and two others received life imprisonment, while 55 additional defendants were given prison terms ranging from three years and three months to 24 years.
Court findings revealed that since 2019, the Wei family leveraged its armed power and local clout in Laukkai to build multiple fenced-off compounds. By providing military-style protection to outside financiers, the syndicate ran industrial-scale telecom fraud, online casinos, extortion, narcotics trafficking, and human smuggling, laundering over 12.2 billion yuan in illicit capital.
Discipline within the compounds was maintained through extreme violence. The court confirmed that the syndicate conspired with scam bosses to execute insubordinate workers, while Chen David personally directed armed subordinates to kill, directly resulting in the deaths of four Chinese nationals.
From lording over Laukkai behind private militia forces to standing before a criminal tribunal facing execution, the era of northern Myanmar warlord families profiting from cross-border rackets has completely crumbled.
