By his account, a week before the incident the compound gathered everyone in the lobby while local troops registered who wanted to go home to China. Nothing happened afterwards. Team leaders kept promising that the beatings would stop, phones would be returned and people could even walk out the gate. The beatings did stop, replaced by punishment drills of hundreds or even a thousand squats and frog jumps.

At 10 PM on October 19, supervisors told everyone who had registered to assemble, saying vehicles would take them home. They were packed five to seven to a car, an armed militiaman with an AK in the front seat, doors locked, with pickup trucks full of gunmen and mounted machine guns in front and behind. The convoy never reached the border. It stopped at a holding site where hundreds of people were squatting inside and out. At 1 AM a guard told them the truth: they were not going home. They had been moved only to get through an inspection on the 20th and would be sent back in the morning.

Everyone knew what being sent back meant, so they planned to seize the guards' weapons. There were only about twenty guards that night, but they sensed trouble, posted a man in every room and called for backup. When the breakout began, the guards fired into the glass-partitioned rooms. The narrator was hit in both shoulders, his right shoulder bone shattered, and the man in front of him dropped to the floor and never answered when he called out. Once the doors gave way, he ran out covered in blood. A militiaman from another compound refused to tell him where a hospital was and chased him off, so he pressed his wounds and walked about a kilometer to a small clinic opposite Bai Yingcang's Cangsheng Tech Park.

The twist: the clinic belonged to a neighboring compound. The bullet lodged in his shoulder blade could not be removed, and that same night he and other wounded escapees were held under guard. The next day the compound's people asked whether they should be sent back to Crouching Tiger Villa, which had put out a bounty on escapees. With the MNDAA fighting nearby and rockets flying over the hills, the compound announced on the seventh day that it was leaving and drove them to the border crossing. Only when he stepped into China and saw rows of Chinese special police did he finally feel safe.

From the fake registration and the move to dodge inspectors to the shooting and a neighboring compound treating the wounded as bargaining chips, this account lays bare how Kokang's armed crime families operated. The incident is widely seen as a turning point that pushed Beijing to intensify its crackdown on scam compounds in northern Myanmar.
