A 30-year-old Chinese national, surnamed Zhao, traveled to Malaysia in mid-September after responding to an advertisement on Xiaohongshu for a managerial post at a purported Taiwanese enterprise. Despite standard interview processes and assurances of a legal work permit, she fell into a state of disorientation in Kluang after consuming beverages provided by the recruiters, losing her capacity for sound judgment over subsequent days.
Zhao was subsequently moved across several areas, including Iskandar Puteri and Kulai, while perpetrators unauthorizedly drained approximately 60,000 Malaysian ringgit from her credit cards and WeChat Pay. The perpetrators also commandeered her smartphone to solicit money from her family in China before dumping her near an industrial area, where local residents intervened to assist her.
Following involvement by local officials, police arrested an ethnic Chinese male suspect surnamed R in Kuala Lumpur on September 27, with court proceedings scheduled for November. The incident illustrates how cross-border criminal networks are weaponizing domestic lifestyle platforms to orchestrate targeted financial theft through chemical incapacitation rather than mere verbal fraud.
Having recovered some personal belongings, the victim is preparing to return to China while remaining in coordination with local authorities for the upcoming trial.
