Thai police intercepted a Chinese national named Zheng Yuqiang at Bangkok's Don Mueang International Airport on Wednesday afternoon, shortly after he arrived on a domestic flight from Chiang Rai. Operating on an arrest warrant, authorities took him into custody on charges of theft and unauthorized use of electronic cards inside aircraft cabins. Earlier victims reported their cards and cash taken from overhead luggage compartments during flights, only to find their accounts drained via POS terminals in Heyuan, Guangdong, China, with total losses reaching hundreds of thousands of baht.
A search of the suspect uncovered multiple bank cards, mobile phones, over 35,000 Thai baht in cash, and banknotes from twelve different countries. The scheme relied on the lack of cellular connection during transit, preventing victims from receiving real-time transaction alerts while airborne, which gave ground accomplices ample time to swipe the cards clean.
Records show that Zheng had entered and exited Thailand 37 times since late 2024, treating frequent flights almost like regular commuting shifts. Although the suspect denies the accusations, Thai authorities have gathered sufficient evidence and are expanding their probe to track down his wider syndicate.
