Police in Can Tho, Vietnam, recently announced the formal prosecution of 24 suspects operating out of Cambodia. The syndicate lured targets into a bogus "virtual gold" investment scheme, instructing them to install the Phantom app and transfer funds into fraudulent trading platforms. Preliminary findings indicate that just four victims were swindled out of roughly 26.56 billion Vietnamese dong.
Instead of cutting contact once the deposits were stolen, the crew deployed a secondary scam. Members posed as legal counsel offering asset-recovery services, convincing devastated victims that lost funds could be reclaimed for an upfront fee. Only when the victims were stripped of every last penny did the operators cut all ties.
The investigation gained traction following a border handover of Vietnamese nationals by Cambodian authorities. With cross-border enforcement tightening, operations run from offshore hubs are finding that their digital footprints follow them straight back home.
