The Singapore Police Force revealed on October 9 that at least 148 cases of hotel and travel booking scams have been recorded this year, with total losses exceeding 185,000 Singapore dollars. Fraudsters have managed to mislead so many travelers precisely because they possess genuine booking records, including hotel names, travel destinations, and exact stay dates.
The scam typically operates via WhatsApp or email, with impostors posing as hotel staff or platform support claiming that a booking needs re-verification or payment confirmation. Victims are directed to fake payment pages, and once credit card details and authorizations are entered, unauthorized charges are instantly processed.
Booking.com has clarified that it never requests credit card details directly through WhatsApp, email, SMS, or phone calls. In a major regional travel hub like Singapore, precise itinerary leaks give cybercriminals a convincing weapon, leaving direct verification with hotels as the most reliable shield against fraudulent links.
