Thai immigration authorities recently apprehended 41-year-old Chinese national Yang inside a high-end condominium in central Pattaya. According to investigators, Yang previously served as a business department general manager at a bank in China. Between 2018 and 2019, he allegedly abused his position to siphon bank funds into his private accounts across 12 separate transfers, embezzling 5.5 million RMB (roughly 27 million THB) before fleeing to Thailand in July 2019.

Yang was initially granted only a two-week stay, expiring in late July 2019. Rather than departing, he dropped off the grid entirely, overstaying his visa for 2,642 days—over seven years. The arrest came out of a special operation against transnational fugitives ordered by the head of Thai immigration. Investigators picked him up at the condo in central Pattaya at 3:40 p.m. on October 7.

Yang is currently being processed by Pattaya police on overstay charges, with arrangements underway for his deportation to China to face prosecution. As regional authorities systematically tighten immigration controls and target cross-border economic fugitives, the room for illicit hideouts in Southeast Asia continues to vanish.
