On September 27, at Sri Lanka's Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, two Chinese men were caught trying to smuggle cigarettes. They had a total of 32,000 foreign cigarettes hidden in their luggage.
Local news reported that the airport's anti-narcotics police acted on a tip-off and checked the two travelers. A 36-year-old man had 70 cartons, totaling 14,000 cigarettes, while a 56-year-old man had 90 cartons, or 18,000 cigarettes.
The police stated that these cigarettes weren't declared properly upon entry. Both men are now in custody, and the case is being investigated further by the airport authorities. They're also looking into where these cigarettes came from and why they were brought in. Smuggling cigarettes is no small matter, especially with the strict security checks at the airport.
